ICBC Basic vs Optional Auto Insurance in British Columbia
Every vehicle in B.C. needs ICBC Basic Autoplan. Optional protection can then be added for risks such as at-fault vehicle damage, non-collision damage and higher liability limits.
ICBC Basic Autoplan is mandatory for vehicles in British Columbia.
Basic insurance includes Enhanced Accident Benefits, Basic Vehicle Damage Coverage and third-party liability protection.
Common optional products include Collision, Comprehensive and Extended Third Party Liability.
What Basic insurance is designed to do
Basic Autoplan creates the compulsory province-wide foundation. Under Enhanced Care it includes injury benefits regardless of responsibility, Basic Vehicle Damage Coverage when another driver is responsible, and Basic Third Party Liability for situations where liability protection still applies.
Why Collision still matters
Basic Vehicle Damage Coverage is tied to the share of a crash for which another driver is responsible. If you are responsible for a crash, optional Collision is the coverage that can pay for damage to your own vehicle, subject to the policy terms and deductible.
Optional does not mean unimportant
Comprehensive can cover non-collision loss such as theft, vandalism and certain weather damage. Extended Third Party Liability increases protection above the Basic limit. The right combination depends on the vehicle, risk tolerance and financial exposure rather than a single province-wide package.
