Monthly vs Annual Insurance Payment Calculator
Compare annual insurance payment with a deposit, your actual instalment count and separate fees. See total costs and the largest instalment that would match or beat annual payment.

Enter the two payment options
Use offers for the same 12-month policy and coverage. Include each payment or charge once. This tool supports a first payment followed by equal instalments; it does not assume there are twelve instalments.
Total cost comparison
Enter the annual quote, first payment, instalment amount and actual payment count.
Annual total = annual-pay quote + separate annual charges. Plan total = first payment + (remaining instalment × count) + total separate plan charges.
The percentage is a total-cost difference, not an interest rate or APR. It does not account for payment dates, the declining financed balance or the cost of borrowing elsewhere.
Use the same coverage, dates and tax basis for both options. No insurer rate, discount, tax, fee or missed-payment charge is assumed. Compare affordability and contract terms alongside total cost.

How to enter a real payment schedule
- Read the complete written schedule, including the first payment, the number of later payments and any separate fees.
- If the first debit is different, enter it as the first payment and count only the equal payments that follow. Do not add it again as an instalment.
- Enter quoted totals on the same tax basis. Add only charges excluded from the relevant quote or payment, and mark confirmed zero charges as 0.
- If later payments vary, ask for their full-term total or use the quote comparison tool with that confirmed total. This worksheet does not build an irregular schedule.
Annual total = annual-pay quote + separate annual charges. Plan total = first payment + (remaining instalment × count) + total separate plan charges.
Worked example: first payment plus ten instalments
An annual-pay quote is $2,400 with no separate charge. The alternative starts with $410, followed by ten instalments of $205, plus $25 in separate charges.
| Item | Amount (CAD) |
|---|---|
| Annual-pay total | $2,400.00 |
| First payment | $410.00 |
| Ten remaining instalments: 10 × $205 | $2,050.00 |
| Separate plan charges | $25.00 |
| Instalment-plan total | $2,485.00 |
| Extra cost over the same year | $85.00 (3.54%) |
At the same first payment and charges, the largest whole-cent instalment that keeps the plan at or below $2,400 is $196.50. This is an arithmetic threshold, not a price the insurer is required to offer.
Common payment questions
Should I always choose annual payment?
The calculator compares the totals you enter. It does not assess whether you can comfortably fund the annual payment, borrowing costs, cancellation terms or missed-payment consequences. Read the written terms before choosing.
Is a 3.54% difference the financing rate?
No. An APR calculation needs payment timing and financing details. Dividing the extra total cost by the annual-pay total is not the same calculation.
Where do fees on every payment go?
You can include them in each instalment or enter their full-year total as a separate plan charge. Include them only once. Keep one-time fees separate from recurring fees when adding the figures.
Can I compare policies with different terms?
Use the quote comparison calculator to record each term. This worksheet assumes both payment options cover the same twelve months and does not convert a six-month quote into an annual rate.
Source and calculation basis
The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada explains that premiums are commonly paid monthly or yearly. The formulas here compare your entered schedule; they do not set an insurer’s charges or recommend a payment method.
