How to Compare Insurance Quotes in Canada

A useful quote comparison holds the insured risk and coverage configuration constant. Price differences mean little when one option has different limits, deductibles, exclusions, payment charges or information about the customer.

Independent research, not a quote form. Canada Rate Lab does not collect personal details, recommend a provider or determine the terms an insurer will offer.

Compare Insurance Quotes

Create one written risk profile, request the same limits and deductibles, and compare the full annual cost. Mark every coverage, endorsement and fee difference. Confirm acceptance, effective date and issued documents before cancelling any existing insurance.

Keep both written offers beside this checklist. Mark a missing answer as unknown and ask the provider to clarify it.

Build one source record for every insurer

Use the same names, address, property, vehicles, drivers, operations, claims history and effective date for every request. Save the exact information supplied so an apparent price difference is not caused by a missing driver, outdated occupancy or incomplete business description.

Answer questions accurately and label uncertainty. IBC's consumer code describes keeping relevant information accurate and current as a policyholder responsibility; an inaccurate quote can also change when underwriting verifies the details.

Match coverage before ranking price

Line up liability limits, property or vehicle damage coverage, deductibles, optional water or catastrophe protection, valuation basis, endorsements and sublimits. Record exclusions or conditions that materially change the protection.

A lower quote with a larger deductible, lower limit or missing endorsement is a different product—not automatically a better price for the same insurance.

Compare the full cost and service structure

Use the annual premium as the main price field, then list taxes, instalment or finance charges, membership fees and any required down payment separately. Monthly withdrawals can hide a different number of payments or a higher total cost.

IBC also recommends considering claims access, cancellation fees, bundles and available discounts. Treat each as a separate comparison rather than reducing the decision to one headline number.

Confirm coverage before ending an old policy

A quote is a proposal based on stated assumptions. Confirm that the insurer has accepted the risk, payment requirements are satisfied and coverage is effective before relying on it.

If replacing existing insurance, coordinate dates and follow the old insurer's cancellation process. Stopping a payment is not a reliable substitute for written cancellation and can create a gap or unpaid balance.
