Ontario Proof of Auto Insurance: Pink Slip & Digital Card
Ontario drivers must be able to show proof of auto insurance. FSRA allows participating insurers to provide an electronic insurance card, while paper proof remains a practical option and may still be useful outside Ontario.
You must be able to show proof of insurance while driving
FSRA says drivers are responsible for ensuring they have proof of auto insurance while driving in Ontario. Some insurers may offer electronic proof, which can be displayed on a mobile device when the policyholder has opted in.
FSRA — It's the law: what you need to know →Electronic proof is optional, not automatic
FSRA says proof-of-insurance options can vary by insurance provider. If an insurer offers an electronic insurance card, the policyholder must consent to receiving it electronically.
The driver is still responsible for being able to display the card. A dead battery, damaged screen or poor service is not a substitute for proof, so FSRA suggests considering a paper version as backup.
FSRA — Electronic proof details →If someone borrows your vehicle, proof still matters
FSRA says that when another person uses your vehicle with permission, proof of insurance still needs to be available for the vehicle. A borrower may need a transferred electronic version or a paper card in the vehicle.
This requirement is about proof of the vehicle's insurance. It does not by itself answer whether every driver or use is acceptable under the policy, so the actual policy and listed-driver information still matter.
Driving outside Ontario can change the proof requirement
FSRA warns that other jurisdictions can have different rules for electronic proof. Before travelling outside Ontario, confirm whether a paper insurance card is needed and what your insurer recommends.
Keep the insurance card current. FSRA's fraud guidance notes that a legitimate proof-of-insurance card contains vehicle insurance information including the policy number and expiry date.
