WorkplaceNL Registration & Workers' Compensation for Businesses

The Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Act requires employers performing work in Newfoundland and Labrador to register with WorkplaceNL. Registration can also apply when a business subcontracts work in the province even if it has no direct workers.

Workers' compensation is not Commercial General Liability

WorkplaceNL is a statutory no-fault workplace-insurance system. CGL is private liability insurance. A business may need to address both, but they protect different exposures and follow different rules.

Incorporation changes the owner-coverage analysis

WorkplaceNL says directors of incorporated companies are considered workers and incorporated entities operating in the province must register even when the owner is the only worker. Non-incorporated proprietors and partners have a different optional-personal-coverage framework.

Subcontracting can create registration obligations

A principal cannot assume that having no payroll means WorkplaceNL is irrelevant. Contracted work performed in the province can trigger registration and contractor-status questions.
