INSURANCE RENEWAL · SWITCHING INSURERS

Switching Insurance Companies in Canada

Switching at renewal is usually easier to compare than cancelling mid-term. The critical controls are equivalent coverage, confirmed effective dates, proper cancellation and written proof that the new policy is active.

Information, not a quote or legal opinion. The issued policy, insurer terms and applicable provincial or territorial rules control the real renewal, cancellation or non-renewal.

QUICK ANSWER

Switch Insurance Companies

Arrange and confirm the new policy before ending the old one. Compare coverage and annual total, align the new start date with the old expiry, follow the old insurer's cancellation process and keep written confirmation. If switching mid-term, calculate the actual fee or short-rate cost first.

Compare more than the premium

Match limits, deductibles, optional coverages, endorsements, exclusions, payment terms and insured information. Also check claims service, repair or vendor options and how changes are handled where those features matter to you.

A new insurer may describe a coverage differently. Obtain the quote and proposed terms in writing before assuming two labels provide the same protection.

Bind the new coverage before ending the old policy

A quote is not always proof that coverage is in force. Confirm acceptance, effective date and required payment, then retain the binder, certificate or policy evidence.

Align the new start with the old expiry or cancellation time. For compulsory auto insurance and property subject to lender requirements, even a short unintended gap can create serious consequences.

Calculate mid-term switching costs

IBC recommends asking what fees apply when cancelling early. The old insurer may calculate earned premium or apply a cancellation method under the policy and applicable rules. Request the exact amount instead of estimating it from the unused months.

Compare the cancellation cost with the remaining-term saving. A lower annual quote does not automatically make an immediate switch cheaper.

Cancel deliberately and keep the records

Do not stop payments as a substitute for cancellation. Follow the insurer or broker's instructions, specify the intended end date and request written confirmation plus any final balance or refund calculation.

Update a lender, lessor, landlord or contracting party when proof of insurance or named interests must remain current.

SWITCHING MATH

Use the actual policy numbers

Compare switching now with keeping the current policy until expiry. Include the insurer’s retained premium, replacement coverage for the same days and additional switching costs.
