TENANT CONTENTS COVERAGE

Belongings Away From Home

IBC says tenant insurance can cover possessions in your apartment and while you are away. The important detail is how your own policy handles off-premises property, limits, exclusions and deductibles.

Do not assume every item is covered everywhere. High-value property, business equipment and certain causes of loss can have different rules.

Examples of property that leaves the apartment

01Laptop and phone

Portable electronics travel with you, but the type of loss and any special limit still matter.

02Bicycle

A bike may spend much of its time outside the rental unit; review theft limits and deductible.

03Luggage and clothing

Personal items taken on a trip can raise off-premises coverage questions.

04Work equipment

Property used for business may need different treatment than ordinary personal belongings.

Questions to check in the policy

Look for the contents limit, any off-premises limit, deductible, special limits for valuables, excluded causes of loss and restrictions on business property. A broad statement that property is covered away from home does not override those details.

Theft away from home still needs claim documentation

If an insured item is stolen outside the apartment, ownership records, photos, receipts and a prompt report can still be important to the claim.
