What does the C$1,810 Alberta average mean?

AIRB's 2026 semi-annual review shows a C$1,810 total average written premium at the latest point in its series, based on industry experience through June 30, 2025. AIRB notes that this includes policyholders who do not purchase optional additional coverages, so it is not a “full coverage” quote.

Alberta pricing and savings research

AIRB explains rate calculation using insurer base rates, individual rating factors, surcharges and discounts. These guides keep 2026 pricing mechanics separate from the reforms that begin in 2027.

What insurance is required in Alberta?

Alberta requires basic automobile insurance, including accident benefits and third-party liability. Collision and comprehensive are additional coverages. Through December 31, 2026, the Grid can cap the price of mandatory basic coverage for certain drivers.

2026 RATE CAP

Good-driver rate increases are capped at 7.5% in 2026

For drivers who meet Alberta's good-driver criteria, the 2026 cap consists of a 5% annual cap plus a 2.5% natural-disaster rider. Qualification depends on recent at-fault accident and conviction history.

Care-First 2027 research

January 1, 2027 is a system change, not just another annual rate update. Canada Rate Lab keeps the injury-benefit reform separate from the simultaneous repeal of the Grid and the new adjusted rate cap.

Licence status, convictions and market-access questions can materially affect insurance and should not be collapsed into the province-wide average.

How to read AIRB rate filings

AIRB publishes approved insurer rate filings for basic, additional and combined coverage. An insurer-level filing is not a prediction of what every customer will pay. Individual renewals can differ because of driver, vehicle, location, coverage and other approved variables.
