Alberta Auto Insurance Rate Caps: 2026 vs 2027

Alberta's 2026 Good Driver Rate Cap and the adjusted rate cap beginning January 1, 2027 are not the same rule. They also should not be confused with the Grid rating system or the separate Care-First injury-benefit reform.

Transition guide. Eligibility and renewal treatment depend on the policy date and driver changes, so always check the rule that applies at the actual renewal.

Alberta introduces an adjusted rate cap alongside Care-First

Alberta says that beginning January 1, 2027 insurers will not be able to raise average rates by more than 5%, while average drivers will have renewal increases capped at 10%, subject to eligibility and changes such as at-fault accidents, convictions, adding a driver, changing vehicles or adjusting coverage.

What applies in 2026?

AIRB describes the current protection as the Good Driver Rate Cap. Its eligibility rules focus on a clean record and can be affected by changes such as moving to a higher-risk area, adding a higher-risk driver, changing vehicles or switching insurers.

That means a cap does not imply every driver's premium can only move by one fixed percentage. Changes in the insured risk or eligibility can change the result.

The Grid is a different mechanism

The Grid rating system establishes a maximum price for specified basic coverage and requires insurers, in most circumstances, to charge the lower of their own calculated rate or the Grid rate. AIRB says the Grid will be repealed effective January 1, 2027 with no replacement Grid system.

Optional coverages are not capped by the Grid. So the Grid, a renewal-rate cap and the full policy premium are different concepts.

Care-First is mainly an injury-benefit system change

Care-First begins January 1, 2027 and changes how injured Albertans access medical, rehabilitation and income-support benefits, while restricting most injury lawsuits. It starts on the same date as major pricing-rule changes, but it is not simply another name for the Grid repeal or the rate cap.

Keeping those changes separate makes it easier to understand whether a statement is about benefits, legal rights, rating rules or a specific renewal premium.
