Use replacement cost, not purchase price

For a rough home inventory, think about what it could cost to replace similar belongings today. An older television or sofa may have little resale value but could cost substantially more to replace after a covered loss.

Items that may need separate attention

Policies can have special limits, exclusions or additional requirements for categories such as jewellery, collections, bicycles, business property or other high-value items. A single total cannot tell you whether those items are fully covered under a particular policy.

Keep evidence where practical. Photos, receipts, serial numbers and a simple inventory can make it easier to document belongings after a loss. Ask an insurer or licensed representative how a specific policy values and limits personal property.

Tenant insurance also does more than insure contents

Tenant policies commonly include personal liability and additional living expense coverage in addition to personal property protection. Read our province guides for lease-specific context.
