Cancelling an Insurance Policy in Canada

Cancellation ends a policy before its scheduled expiry. The process and financial result depend on who cancels, why, when coverage ends, policy wording and provincial or territorial rules.

Information, not a quote or legal opinion. The issued policy, insurer terms and applicable provincial or territorial rules control the real renewal, cancellation or non-renewal.

QUICK ANSWER

Cancel an Insurance Policy

Ask for the cancellation procedure and a written calculation for the requested date. Confirm the final insured day, earned premium, fees, refund or balance, and whether another party must be notified. Never use missed payments to force a cancellation.

Identify who is ending the policy and why

A policyholder-requested cancellation, insurer cancellation, non-renewal and expiry are different events. Record the reason and the exact effective date and time rather than using the word cancelled for every situation.

When the insurer initiates the change, review the notice, policy clause and applicable provincial or territorial process. When you initiate it, follow the insurer's required method.

Request the real financial calculation

Ask what premium has been earned to the cancellation date, which fee or short-rate method applies, and whether the result is a refund or balance owing. Do not assume the unused calendar days will be refunded dollar for dollar.

If a premium is financed or paid by instalments, distinguish the policy accounting from the payment schedule. Stopping a withdrawal does not itself complete a valid cancellation.

Protect continuous coverage and third-party interests

Arrange replacement coverage before cancelling when the risk still exists. Vehicle owners, mortgage borrowers, tenants and businesses may also have legal or contractual obligations to maintain insurance or provide proof.

Tell the new insurer the correct prior-insurance and cancellation history. Preserve the old cancellation confirmation and new evidence of insurance together.

Challenge errors through the correct channel

If the cancellation date, reason or accounting appears wrong, ask the insurer for a written explanation tied to the policy and payment record. Use its formal complaint process if the ordinary service channel does not resolve the issue.

National guidance cannot replace jurisdiction-specific law. Ontario auto consumers can use FSRA's detailed cancellation and termination resources; other markets have their own regulators and public-insurer processes.

Use the actual policy numbers

Work through policy dates, paid and retained premium, additional charges and a potential refund or balance owing. The pro-rata estimate does not replace the provider’s settlement.
