Manitoba Tenant Insurance
Manitoba renter insurance explained from Residential Tenancies Branch guidance: when insurance can be required, what a landlord's policy does not cover, liability, contents, additional living expenses and water-related risk.

Insurance is recommended, but the requirement rule is nuanced
Manitoba's Residential Tenancies Branch says a landlord generally cannot insist that a tenant carry liability insurance as a condition of tenancy. The Branch still recommends tenant insurance and recognizes that an insurance requirement can be reasonable for special risks such as a waterbed, large aquarium or portable washer.

Your landlord's building insurance does not cover your belongings
The Manitoba RTB tenant-insurance fact sheet says a landlord's building policy covers the building itself — such as walls, doors, floors and landlord-provided appliances — but not the renter's own furniture, electronics, clothing and other belongings.
Liability can matter even when insurance is not universally mandatory
RTB explains that a tenant may have to pay when the tenant or a guest causes accidental damage to the unit or building. It also notes that a guest can sue for injury and that liability insurance can help with covered claims. That financial exposure is separate from whether the landlord can impose a blanket insurance condition.

Manitoba RTB recommends estimating how much it would cost to replace everything you own and asking whether the policy pays replacement cost or cash value. It also says tenant insurance usually includes additional living expense coverage, subject to policy limits.
Do not treat every kind of water damage as the same coverage
Manitoba renters should separate ordinary insured water damage from sewer backup and overland flood. A landlord may handle repairs to the building, but the renter still needs to understand how their own belongings, deductible and additional living expenses respond.
