Nunavut Tenant Insurance: Contents, Liability & Living Expenses

Tenant insurance is designed around the renter rather than the building: covered belongings, personal liability and eligible additional living expenses after an insured loss.

Landlord insurance ≠ tenant insurance. Compare the renter's contents, liability, ALE, deductible and exclusions separately.
KEY POINTS

✓ A landlord's property insurance does not automatically insure a tenant's belongings.

✓ Contents, personal liability and additional living expenses answer different claim questions.

✓ Coverage limits, deductibles and exclusions vary by policy.

✓ Tenant insurance is not presented here as a territorial statutory requirement.

Compare three coverage columns

Record the contents limit, liability limit and additional living expense limit separately. The premium alone does not show whether two tenant policies provide the same protection.

The building and your belongings are different property

The landlord generally insures the structure and landlord-owned property. Tenant insurance addresses the renter's covered possessions and personal liability, subject to the policy.

Read the deductible and exclusions

Confirm which deductible applies, how personal property losses are settled and whether special limits apply to jewellery, bicycles, electronics or other categories.
