Nunavut Tenant Insurance: Fire Displacement & ALE

Tenant policies commonly include additional living expense coverage for certain extra costs when an insured loss makes a rental unlivable, subject to the policy's trigger and limits.

Landlord insurance ≠ tenant insurance. Compare the renter's contents, liability, ALE, deductible and exclusions separately.
KEY POINTS

✓ The Nunavut Fire Marshal investigates reported fires and oversees fire and building safety.

✓ IBC identifies additional living expenses as a component of tenant insurance.

✓ Coverage triggers, dollar limits and time limits vary.

✓ Tenants should keep official notices, receipts and insurer instructions.

Confirm the coverage trigger first

Ask whether insured damage has made the unit unfit to live in and which policy provision applies. A precautionary evacuation may not be handled the same way as displacement after insured physical damage.

Track the additional cost

Keep itemized records for accommodation, meals, laundry, transport, storage and other extra expenses. Coverage is subject to policy terms rather than every cost being automatically reimbursed.

Plan for limited temporary accommodation

Availability can be constrained in a small or remote community. Contact the insurer early, document the options provided and confirm authorization before committing to a long stay or travel.
