Manitoba Driver Safety Rating: MPI Discounts & Demerits Explained

MPI's Driver Safety Rating links driving record to insurance discounts. From April 1, 2026 the scale extends to +20, where eligible vehicle premiums can receive the maximum 53% discount.

Current as of August 31, 2026. This guide uses MPI and Manitoba regulatory material and explains the insurance structure rather than estimating a personal quote.
KEY POINTS
01

The Driver Safety Rating scale expanded to 41 levels for the 2026/27 insurance year.

02

The new highest level is +20 and can provide up to a 53% discount on eligible vehicle premiums.

03

At-fault claims and certain convictions can move a driver down the scale and reduce future discounts.

The DSR changes the driver side of the price

A safe driving record can improve a driver's place on the scale and increase the discount applied to eligible vehicle premiums. The scale is separate from vehicle, use and territory rating, so it does not replace those other inputs.

An at-fault loss can have a multi-year effect

When a driver moves down the DSR scale, the effect can continue beyond the immediate claim year because future discounts depend on the driver's position and subsequent safe-driving progression.

Maximum discount does not mean identical premiums

Two drivers at the same DSR level can still pay different premiums if their vehicles, territories, uses or coverage choices differ. The percentage is a rating discount, not a province-wide price.

Measure your own policy

Public rate orders and insurance rules provide context. Your own renewal remains the personal benchmark, and it should be compared before attributing a change to one factor.
