OPCF 20 Loss of Use Coverage in Ontario
OPCF 20, also called Transportation Replacement or Loss of Use, can cover eligible rental-vehicle costs while your insured vehicle is being repaired or replaced after a loss caused by a peril for which you are insured.
OPCF 20 can pay transportation-replacement costs after an insured loss
FSRA describes OPCF 20 as coverage for the cost of a rental vehicle while you replace or repair your vehicle when the damage or loss is caused by a peril for which you are insured.
FSRA — Optional and extra coverage →What OPCF 20 is designed to do
The endorsement addresses temporary transportation after an eligible insured loss. It can help with rental-vehicle costs while the insured automobile is being repaired or replaced, subject to the endorsement limit and conditions.
The key phrase is an insured loss. A mechanical breakdown, routine maintenance problem or event excluded by the policy should not be assumed to trigger OPCF 20.
OPCF 20 is different from DCPD loss of use
Ontario's standard DCPD section can include loss-of-use protection for certain accidents in Ontario when another insured motorist is at fault, unless the policyholder has elected not to claim DCPD using OPCF 49.
OPCF 20 is a separate optional endorsement. When comparing policies, check which loss-of-use protection is already present and which situations the endorsement adds rather than assuming every rental-car expense is handled the same way.
FSRA — Standard auto insurance policy →What to compare before adding OPCF 20
Check the maximum amount payable, any daily or total limits shown in the endorsement, which physical-damage coverages are on the vehicle and what events qualify as insured perils.
Do not compare only the endorsement premium. Two policies can both show OPCF 20 while having different underlying collision, comprehensive, deductible and limit structures.
