Saskatchewan WCB Contractor Clearances: When You Need One

Saskatchewan WCB says a principal must request a clearance before paying a contractor for completed work. The clearance protects the principal from certain unpaid contractor premiums and can reveal whether the contractor is cleared, deemed a worker or on hold.

Clearance is a payment-control document

WCB describes a clearance as authorization for the principal to pay the contractor for completed work. It is not a certificate of CGL insurance and should not be used as a substitute for reviewing private insurance certificates required by a contract.

Deemed status changes the workplace-insurance relationship

If the contractor is not registered when required, WCB can treat the contractor as a worker of the principal, making the principal responsible for related premiums. That is why contractor status affects more than procurement paperwork.

Ask for clearance at the right stage

A principal may check status before hiring, but the current policy specifically requires a clearance before paying for completed work. Businesses should build that check into accounts-payable procedures.

PAYMENT CONTROL

Clearance is required before paying the contractor

WCB's current policy says the principal must request the clearance before releasing payment for completed work. A pre-hire status check can also be useful, but it does not replace the payment-stage clearance.
