ALBERTA HOME RISK · HAIL

Hail Damage Insurance in Alberta

Hail is a major Alberta property risk, but the useful insurance question is not whether the province gets hail — it is what your policy covers, which deductible applies and whether any limits or settlement conditions affect roofs, siding or other exterior property.

There is no single Alberta hail deductible or coverage limit that applies to every home policy. Policy form, insurer, location, roof condition and selected endorsements can change the answer.

Alberta tells homeowners to check the coverage limits that apply to hail damage

The Government of Alberta advises property owners to understand what their policy covers and specifically asks consumers to check the coverage limits that apply if their property experiences hail damage. It also stresses that products, limits and exclusions vary by insurer.

How home insurance can respond to hail

Insurance Bureau of Canada lists wind and hail among common insured perils in broad home coverage, subject to the policy wording. Exterior building damage can be covered, and interior damage can be relevant when a storm first creates an opening in the building.

That general description is not a substitute for your policy. Deductibles, roof settlement terms, exclusions and limits can differ between insurers and homes.

Roof age and maintenance are separate from sudden hail damage

Home insurance is not a maintenance contract. Wear, deterioration or a roof already at the end of its service life should not be treated as the same thing as sudden insured hail damage.

Document roof condition, upgrades and repairs before a loss. After a storm, photograph visible damage when safe and contact the insurer before committing to major repairs other than reasonable emergency work.

Compare the deductible and settlement wording, not only the premium

A policy can be cheaper while retaining more hail risk through a higher deductible, lower limit or different settlement basis. Compare the same structure when reviewing renewals.

Ask which deductible applies to hail, whether roof or siding settlement wording changes with age, and whether cosmetic damage limitations or other endorsements appear on the policy.
