MPI Claims: From Collision Report to Repair or Write-Off
A practical map of the Manitoba vehicle-claim lifecycle: report the incident, establish coverage and responsibility, estimate and repair the vehicle, or settle a total loss.
Four claim decisions that should not be collapsed into one
Reporting an incident does not itself decide responsibility, repair scope or settlement value. MPI separates those stages, so Canada Rate Lab does too.
Report promptly and let MPI explain the estimate path
MPI asks drivers to exchange details, report the collision promptly and provide vehicle, driver, incident and witness information. If vehicle damage is being claimed, MPI discusses the available estimating options after the claim is opened.
How to Report an MPI Claim →Fault affects more than one number
MPI's responsibility decision can affect deductible recovery and Driver Safety Rating. Current MPI guidance says an at-fault collision moves a driver down five DSR levels. That does not mean every future premium increases by one fixed percentage because the new DSR level, vehicle, use and territory still interact.
Repair versus write-off is an economic decision
MPI compares the cost of repair with the vehicle's actual cash value and expected salvage value. A write-off can therefore occur even when a damaged vehicle is technically repairable.
Different disagreements have different review paths
MPI provides review and appeal information for responsibility, repair and settlement disagreements. Court procedures can also determine collision fault. A dispute over responsibility is therefore not the same as a dispute over repair scope or vehicle value.
