MPI Vehicle Repair Process: Estimates, Shops & Direct Repair

The repair process starts by opening an MPI claim. The vehicle then receives an estimate through an MPI centre, an eligible participating shop or photo-based estimating before repairs proceed.

Current as of August 31, 2026. This page explains the MPI consumer process. Actual coverage, responsibility, repair approval and settlement depend on the individual claim.
KEY POINTS
01

MPI says the first step to repairing insured vehicle damage is opening a claim.

02

Estimate options can include an MPI Service or Claim Centre, an eligible participating repair shop or photo-based estimating.

03

An MPI estimator reviews the initial damage and can approve additional claim-related damage found by the repair facility.

The first estimate is not always the final repair scope

A preliminary estimate is based on the damage visible during the first inspection. A shop can discover additional claim-related damage after disassembly, which the MPI estimator can review and approve when supported.

Direct Repair can remove an extra estimating trip

Eligible claims can go directly to a participating Direct Repair shop after the claim is reported. Not every claim or shop qualifies, so MPI explains the available estimate path when the claim is opened.

Check the repair after pickup

MPI recommends checking appearance, paint match, doors and panels, electronics, unusual noises and vehicle handling after repair. Concerns should first be raised with the repair shop and then with the assigned estimator if unresolved.
