SGI Safe Driver Recognition: Discounts, Points & Penalties

Discount and penalty are different mechanisms
A positive safety rating reduces eligible Basic vehicle insurance. A driver in the Penalty Zone can instead face an incident-based financial penalty. The program should not be simplified into one generic surcharge percentage.
A collision does not automatically create the same dollar penalty for everyone
The effect depends on the driver's safety-rating position and how many points the incident removes. A driver with a large positive cushion may remain in the Safety Zone after losing points.
Safe driving moves the scale back
Each incident-free year generally moves the driver one point toward the Safety Zone, and SGI describes a three-consecutive-year route back to neutral for drivers who remain in the Penalty Zone.
Positive points do not all earn the same incremental discount
Points +1 through +10 earn 2% per point. The discount stays at 20% from +11 through +20 while the driver builds a cushion, then rises one percentage point per level from +21 to +25.
