Saskatchewan Basic Plate Insurance: What SGI Includes

Saskatchewan combines compulsory vehicle registration with Basic insurance from SGI. The plate package includes physical-damage protection, personal-injury benefits and third-party liability, while additional protection is purchased separately.

Source-led guide. Saskatchewan Basic plate insurance, optional extension insurance and driver-program rules are kept separate so a system-level number is not mistaken for a personal quote.

Registration and insurance are linked

Saskatchewan's public system combines mandatory registration and Basic plate insurance. That makes a plate premium different from an optional package-policy premium and different again from the total amount paid after taxes, registration fees or discounts.

Physical damage is already part of the Basic package

SGI says plate insurance covers loss or damage from causes including collision, upset, fire, theft, windstorm and hail, subject to the applicable deductible and coverage limitations.

Basic does not mean every risk is fully covered

The C$200,000 liability limit and the Basic deductible may be lower or higher than a household wants to retain. Extended insurance can be used to top up liability, lower the deductible, add rental protection or address other needs.
