Saskatchewan Auto Insurance in 2026
SGI Basic plate insurance, the June 2026 rate change, Safe Driver Recognition, vehicle-based rating, deductibles, No Fault versus Tort injury coverage and optional extensions explained from primary SGI sources.

Basic plate insurance is the compulsory foundation
Saskatchewan combines vehicle registration and Basic minimum insurance. SGI says the plate package includes physical damage, personal-injury benefits and up to C$200,000 of third-party liability. Extended insurance is a separate layer.
SGI implemented a 3.75% interim increase for most vehicle classes
Motorcycles and urban taxis were excluded from the 2026 interim change while SGI consults with those groups. SGI says about 98% of Saskatchewan vehicles saw an average annual increase of C$38, about 1% saw an average annual decrease of C$8 and the remainder saw no change.
Those figures describe the rate program. The actual insurance premium still depends on the vehicle's risk and claim-cost characteristics plus applicable driver discounts or surcharges.

SGI says age, gender and where you live do not set the Basic insurance cost
The Auto Fund says it does not use a driver's age, gender or residence location when determining Basic insurance rates. Vehicle claim-cost experience, vehicle characteristics and the driver's Safe Driver Recognition record are more useful research dimensions than a generic Regina-versus-Saskatoon premium comparison.
How Saskatchewan rates are set →Safe Driver Recognition can reduce eligible Basic insurance by up to 25%
Positive SDR points earn discounts on eligible vehicle insurance. The first 10 positive points earn 2% per point, +11 through +20 hold a 20% discount while building a cushion, and +21 through +25 raise the discount one percentage point per level to a maximum of 25%.
Read the SDR guide →No Fault is the default injury framework
All Saskatchewan residents start with No Fault injury coverage unless they formally elect Tort Coverage. The choice in force at the time of a collision governs the injury-benefit framework for that event, so it should not be confused with physical-damage coverage or the C$200,000 Basic liability limit.
Compare No Fault and Tort →Extended insurance fills specific gaps
SGI describes extension insurance as a separate policy that can increase liability, reduce the physical-damage deductible, add rental/loss-of-use protection or provide other policy-specific benefits. Compare equivalent limits instead of package names.
Use SGI's calculator for a real vehicle
SGI provides a current vehicle registration and insurance rate calculator using the vehicle criteria and safety rating entered by the user. Canada Rate Lab does not copy one vehicle result and relabel it as a Saskatchewan-wide average.

The most useful personal benchmark remains your actual expiring insurance cost versus the actual new cost, with registration fees, PST, EV road-use charge and SDR adjustments kept identifiable.
