Western Canada Insurance Research
Compare four western provincial markets without treating their auto systems, property hazards, tenancy rules or workplace coverage as interchangeable.
Choose a western province
Four insurance lines in every province
Four provinces, four auto-insurance frameworks
Western Canada does not have one auto-insurance model. Hold the driver, vehicle, use and coverage package constant when comparing cost signals, and use the province-specific rules for the actual policy.
Compulsory ICBC Basic; optional coverage is added separately.
Private insurers; Care-First is scheduled to begin January 1, 2027.
Compulsory SGI Basic plate insurance; additional coverage is separate.
Required MPI Basic Autopac; optional and specialized coverage is separate.
Care-First makes the comparison time-sensitive
AIRB says Alberta remains a private-insurer, tort-based system today and is scheduled to move to Care-First on January 1, 2027. Current premiums, benefits and claim pathways should not be blended with the future framework.
Property risk changes across the West
Earthquake protection and some water coverage can require separate decisions; rebuilding limits and availability also matter.
Separate the physical hazard from the policy response, deductible and selected endorsement.
Severe storms can combine wind, hail and water causes that may follow different coverage pathways.
Overland water, sewer backup, wind and hail should be checked as distinct causes of loss.
Tenant and business obligations remain provincial
Lease terms, landlord requirements, deposits and dispute processes must be checked where the rental unit is located.
A landlord or strata policy is not a substitute for the tenant's contents, liability or additional living expense protection.
Employer registration and worker coverage belong to WorkSafeBC, WCB-Alberta, Saskatchewan WCB, WCB Manitoba respectively.
Commercial auto, property, CGL, business interruption, E&O and cyber respond to different loss scenarios.
How to compare western insurance
Public and private auto layers, regulators and claims systems do not transfer across provincial borders.
A cheaper premium can reflect less protection rather than a better price for the same policy.
Postal code, commute, building type, occupancy, business activity and local hazard exposure can change the result.
Use the current insurer quote, policy wording and licensed advice for a purchase or renewal decision.
